Summary The District curriculum covers a broad range of traditional and innovative programs. The elementary program emphasizes basic skills in reading, language, writing, mathematics, spelling, social studies and science. It also includes regular instruction in art, music and physical education. All elementary schools have complete library-media-technology centers and computers in many classrooms. All elementary schools offer half-day and full-day kindergarten. All sixth grade students attend Steger Sixth Grade Center, where the curriculum emphasizes writing, research and laboratory skills. Hixson Middle School, for grades seven and eight, is organized using a team concept. Students study English, mathematics, social studies and science through a team-teaching approach, with each part of the curriculum reinforcing the others. Teams of approximately 100 students work with the same group of teachers throughout the school year. Teachers at Hixson have received national attention for the innovative methods they use to teach the writing process. Electives at Hixson include French, Spanish, German, instrumental and vocal music, family and consumer science, art, drama and industrial arts. Webster Groves High School offers solid programs in English, social studies, mathematics, science, art, business education, drama, foreign languages, family and consumer science, industrial technology, music and physical education. Advanced placement courses are available, including art history, English, mathematics, physics, American history, French and Spanish. Other options include off-campus instruction, work-study programs, dual enrollment in area universities, independent studies and honors programs. "Community Campus" offers qualifying juniors and seniors the opportunity to spend up to two hours each day volunteering in the community in an area of their interest. The high school also offers an award-winning music program, and a variety of sports, including boys and girls teams in basketball, cross country, soccer, swimming, tennis and track and field. Boys also have baseball, football, golf and wrestling. Girls have softball and volleyball. The North Central Association of Secondary Schools has accredited the high school since the association was formed in 1906. The high school is also a full member of the College Board Association.
