Valentine's Party

Thanks to all who helped plan and supervise the party and also to those who sent in treats.  The class had a fun afternoon!

Conferences

It's that time of the year again!  Attached to today's paper copy of the HH is the conference times for the week of March 11.  Many of you signed up for a time slot back in August. I understand a lot can change between then and now so please let me know as soon as possible if you need to change your time.  For those who were not able to sign up at Open House you can choose any of the empty spots.  A reminder will be sent again next week and the final schedule will go home on Wednesday, March 6.

Thanks for your time this time.  Until next time..........

XtraMath

I want to thank those of you who have gone through the set up with your child for XtraMath at home.  According to the students who did try it at home, the letter I sent home last week didn't need to be sent.  The students can use the same login at home as they use at school.  If your child doesn't remember their login number at home let me know and I'll send it home.  XtraMath seems to be an enjoyable way for the students to practice their basic facts at home.  I am able to monitor progress being made both at school and home.  Thanks for supporting this alternative to old fashioned flash cards!

Ecology Center

Included in today's Wednesday envelope is a flyer from the Litzsinger Road Ecology Center.  The flyer is about an opportunity for your child to attend a free camp during Spring Break.

Thanks for your time this time.  Until next time..........

It was great to see so many of you at Math Night last night.  Thanks for showing your support for fun Hudson events!

Pancake Breakfast

Speaking of fun events, please remember this Saturday, January 19, is the Hudson pancake breakfast from 8:00 - 11:00am. There are many raffle items in which can purchase tickets during this week.  You do not need to attend the breakfast to buy the raffle tickets.  I hope to see you there Saturday morning.

 Book Orders

With the December book order, Scholastic Books sent us a certificate for each child to get a free book worth up to $5.  I am sending home the order forms today.  You can help your child choose a book from either order form.  In the column marked "Amt Due" please write "FREE" next to the book your child chooses.  If they don't find a book this month they can wait until the February order comes home.  Orders for this month are due next Wednesday, January 23.

Enjoy the long weekend!

Thanks for your time this time.  Until next time..........

The Wheels on the Bus
Our next trip is an all school trip for a program at Steger.  That trip will take place on January 9, 2013.  It seems like a long time away, but it's not that many school days and only 2 days after we return from Winter Break.  Therefore I am including the permission sheet for this trip in today's Wednesday envelope.  Please try to return this sheet by next Thursday, December 20.  More information about the trip will come from Mrs. Hilpert through the Wednesday envelope.
 School Service Project
This Friday, December 14, is the end of the school service project of collecting money for service dog training.  Students are being asked to bring in coins for this project.  If you have not heard about this project ask your child about the visit we had from the dogs!
I hope you and your family have a wonerful holiday season!

Thanks for your time this time.  Until next time..........

The Wheels on the Bus
It's time for our next journey(s), this time to the Art Museum.  We will be going twice in the next couple of weeks on Wednesday, December 5 and 12.  For those trips we will leave school at 12:15 and will be returning to school around 2:20.  The permission sheet for the trips is attached to the paper copy of this letter coming home in the Wednesday envelope.
Popsicle Saver
We had some very successful "savers" yesterday.  Some popsicles were still frozen solid, others a little soft, but most importantly was the learning that took place.  The students figured out how to make adjustments to their savers and made them work.  Thanks for your help in the success of the popsicle savers.
Book Orders
In a few days I will be sending home 3 or 4 different book orders.  With the holiday season approaching  Scholastic book orders are an inexpensive way to buy books as presents.  If you would like to purchase books as a present for your child you can write "SURPRISE" or "PRESENT" on the order and I will be sure to keep the books aside.  I will then contact you when the books arrive so we can arrange for you to pick up the books.
 School Service Project
During the next few weeks the school service project is collecting money for service dog training.  Students are being asked to bring in coins for this project.  If you have not heard about this project ask your child about the visit we had from the dogs!

Conferences
I enjoyed talking with most of you during the first part of the week and look forward to seeing the rest of you tonight and tomorrow.  If you think of something you forgot to bring up during the conference please know I am available to discuss your child's progress anytime.
Popsicle Saver
Tomorrow the students will come home with directions for making a popsicle saver for our heat unit in science.  A popsicle saver is basically a homemade cooler that will need to keep a popsicle solid for about 3 hours.  Items purchased as a  cooler are NOT allowed to be used.  The popsicle saver will be used on Tuesday, November 27.  However we will do a practice run with ice cubes on Wednesday, November 21.  That gives you and your child this weekend to create the popsicle saver and Thanksgiving weekend to make any changes your child learns about during the test run on the 21st.

Thanks for your time this time.  Until next time..........

Conferences
Thank you all for returning your conference request forms.  I am looking forward to see everyone next week to discuss your child's progress.  As the next week goes by please start thinking about any questions you may have about 4th grade and your child's progress.  If you do have questions or comments be sure to write them down and bring them to the conference.  I am attaching the final conference schedule to the paper copy of this newsletter.  If something comes up between now and then that won't allow you to keep your scheduled time please let me know so we can reschedule.

Thanks for your time this time.  Until next time..........

Halloween

Thanks for all of the planning and preparation to make sure your child had a costume for the parade.  A special thanks to the parents who put together the food and activities for the party.
Conferences
It's hard to believe but conferences are only a few weeks away, the week of November 12.  Back in August at Open House many of you signed up for a conference time.  I am including that schedule in today's Wednesday envelope.  I know that schedules can change over the course of a couple of months and the time you signed up for that may not still work for your family.   I have also added some before and after school times if that would work better for you.  Please let me know of any changes as soon as possible so that I can open up your time slot to others.  I'm looking forward to talking with you about your child's progress.  I will assign times to those not returning their request next Wednesday, November 7.

Thanks for your time this time.  Until next time..........

Halloween

Next Wednesday will be the school's fall parade and party.  The students are allowed to dress in their costumes for the parade.  As a school we ask that costumes are "school friendly" meaning no blood, weapons (even fake weapons), or costumes that may frighten some of the younger students.  Students do not have to be in a costume to participate in the parade.

Kazoos

In music class Mrs. Mosley will be making kazoo with the students to use for a song when we take a trip to Powell Symphony Hall in the spring.  To make the kazoos empty toilet paper rolls are needed.  Please send one or two with your child sometime in the near future.

Sleep

On Monday, Mr. Wymore did a lesson dealing with collecting and displaying data.  The question he gave the students was, "How much sleep did you get last night?"  I was shocked to find out 2 students had 6 hours of sleep, 2 others 7 hours and 3 others 8 hours.  The recommended amount of sleep for a10 year old child is 10 hours. Only 4 of the students said got that much sleep the previous night.  I understand "life" sometimes gets in the way of the need amount of sleep, but I'm asking for your help in making sure your child gets a good night of sleep every night.  I know it's hard for me to function without enough sleep so I'm guessing it is even harder for a 10 year old to learn while they are tired.  Thanks for your help!
The Wheels on the Bus
Mark your calendars....... our trip to Jefferson City in May 9.  More information to come.  I just wanted you to be able to put it on your calendar in case you want to join us.

Next Wednesday, October 10 is an early dismissal day.  The students will be dismissed at 11:30 on that day.

Book Orders are due next Wednesday, October 10.

Just a short note this week.  Things are running smoothly in room 108, but I wanted to give you a small heads-up reminder.

Homework

So far this month there have been 16 homework assignments not turned in on time by various students.  The students will have homework every night, Monday through Thursday.  The homework consists of reading for 20 minutes and a writing topic every night, along with a math, spelling, science or social studies sheet.  Occasionally there will be 2 sheets to do.  If you know your child was not able to complete the homework please send me a note or an email letting me know that you know they weren't able to finish it.  Thanks for your help in making sure all homework is complete.

Enjoy the week of great weather!

Thanks for your time this time.  Until next time..........

Math

We are completing our first unit in math today.  This unit was mainly about mulitplication.  I have been stressing to the students the importance of them knowing their multiplication facts extremly well.  While we do spend some time practicing them at school it is going to be helpful in their math progress this year if they were to spend some time at home each night practicing their facts.  You can do this with flash cards.  Each student has a baggie with flash cards in them if you don't have any at home.  Thanks for your assistance with this.  In our next math unit we will be working with data.

Open House

It was great to see so many of you at open house.  In talking with other teachers, I think our class had one of the highest number of parents attending.  Your support is important for all of us to have a successful year.  If you were not able to make it and have questions, please be sure to contact me.

Please remember you can subscribe to the newsletter by scrolling to the bottom of the Parent Information page on my class' website.

Book orders will be due next Tuesday, September 11.

Field Trips

Breathe, breathe, breathe......Sorry to drop the bombshell of the $45 dollar field trip fee for fourth grade.  I was planning to talk about it tomorrow at Open House, but didn't think about the form coming home prior to that. Let me try to clear everything up for you regarding the money.  The fee does include all of our trips for the year.  The large majority of this money goes for our Jefferson City trip and the meal we have before returning to St. Louis that day.  We understand this is a lot of money for trips and we are not expecting you to pay before our first trip.  We ask that the entire amount be paid by the time we go to Jefferson City in late April or early May.  Some families do pay it all right now so they don't have to worry about it, some families pay $5 each month, some families pay the entire amount right before the Jefferson City trip.  It doesn't make any difference to us we want you to do what is best for your family.

We do apply for grants and use PTO support to pay for a lot of the trips.

Open House

As I mentioned above I was planning on talking about field trips at Open House tomorrow night.  I also plan to talk about our curriculum and what is expected in fourth grade.  My classroom meeting is set up to work best with a lot of parents so please plan on joining us at 6pm tomorrow, August 23.  The meeting will begin in the gym them move to the classrooms.  I'm looking forward to meeting with all of you.

Remember you can subscribe for HH updates by going to the Parent Information page on the website and scrolling to the bottom of the page.

Welcome to Fourth Grade

This is the first "issue" of the HH, our weekly newsletter to try to keep you informed as to what is happening in room 108.  As the year progresses and you have questions you can reach me by email at: havrilka.tom@wgmail.org, leave a voice message at 963-6466 x 16108, stop by to see me before or after school or by sending a note with your child.  In each case I will try to get back to you as soon as possible.

This newsletter will also be online.  The district is in a year long process of changing web servers so it may take a minute to find it.  I will be using the old site most (if not all) of the year so when you do find it be sure to bookmark the site.  At the bottom of the newsletter under the "Parent Information" tab.  If you scroll to the bottom of the page you can subscribe for a notice when the newsletter is ready online.  You will also be able to subscribe at Open House next week.  I will also send a paper copy home every week.

Here is some of the housekeeping information about how things will work this year.  I'm excited about working with this group of children all year!

Homework

We will usually have homework four nights a week, with occasional projects needing some weekend work.  Homework should take about 45 minutes each night to complete.  There will be a writing assignment each night.  The students will receive a topic for their assignment each day.  I will also ask the students to read a book of their choice each night.  The homework will be posted on the website each day.  As with any homework, if you and your child have questions about a homework assignment please let me know immediately.

Assignment Notebooks

To assist in the organization of homework assignments the school purchacsed an assignment notebook to each student.  The cost of the book is four dollars ($4).  Please send the money for these notebooks to the office as soon as possible.

Book Orders

Every couple of weeks I will send home Scholastic book order form(s).  Scholastic is a great way to purchase books for your child.  The books are usually reasonably priced and you don't have to leave the house!  If you and your child would like to order books, it is easiest for me if you pay by check payable to SCHOLASTIC BOOKS.  If you need to pay with cash please send the correct change.

Birthdays

We love to celebrate a child's special day!  If your child would like to celebrate his/her birthday with us at school with treats, this is an exciting time for the entire class.  School rules state treats must be store bought.  I prefer you send them with your child in the morning as celebration times may vary from day to day depending on that day's schedule.

Field Trips

There is a field trip form included in this week's Wednesday envelope.  Our first trip is to the Litzsinger Road Ecology Center.  I will send more information about our fourth grade trips next week.

Open House

I'm looking forward to spending the evening with you next Thursday, August 23, for our Open House.  We will go through the day just as we do our regular day, with some time to talk about questions you have about the upcoming year.  The way I have the evening organized, it will work much better when we have as many parents there as possible.  I think you'll find the evening worth while.  Bring any questions you may have.

I promise not all newsletters will be this long; thanks for hanging with it to this point!

Thanks for your time this time.  Until next time……….
