EXTRACREDIT!

I'm always looking forinteresting bits of German information. If you experience something German withyour child, have him or her write me a short paragraph  about it for extra credit points! Here aresome ideas. Let me know if you have more!

 

1.  Rent German movies with subtitles! A lot ofthe famous German films are too mature or depressing for middle schoolers, butthere are some appropriate ones out there

2.Explore one of the many German heritage sites around the St. Louis area. If you want a littleroadtrip, Hermann Missourihas  a lot of family-friendly Germanevents.  German Country Days is coming up in October!

3.  There are several good German restaurants inthe area. Students are good menu readers!

4.If you have friends or family members who are from Germanyor lived in Germany,have students write up some information about that person. (town, name, etc).OR arrange with me to have the person come speak to the class!

5.Go to a German Festival. They occur periodically in the St. Louis area. Soulard has an Oktoberfest.

6.Music! There are many wonderful German bands! Tokio Hotel is quite popular atthe moment.  Also, if your child likes tosing, he or she can learn a German song and sing for the class.

7.UMSL has an exhibition about the Berlinairlift starting in September.

8. There are TV specials, such as German Americans and DeutscheWelle, on local cable.

Additional EXTRA CREDIT ideas!

1. Original Story  



Createyour own original story from the most recent vocabulary list.  It must contain at least 100 words and becompletely in German.  Underline thewords from the vocabulary list you are using. 

 

2.  Picture Story    

Draw at least 10 pictures in storyformat.  Under each picture write atleast 2 sentences, telling what is happening in each picture.  The pictures must be related and tell astory.  Put as many pictures as possibleon each sheet of paper.

 

 

3.  CrazyCommands

Write ten crazy but appropriatecommands that you could give to another student.  If they are interesting enough you can dothem for the whole class if you want.

 

4.  Flash Cards    

Make FANCY flash cards with themost recent list of vocabulary words. Use 4X6 index cards.  One sideshould be a full color picture and the other side should be the word or phrasein German.  Put them together with acover card with your name, assignment #, date, vocabulary list, etc. (Minimum10 words) (15 points) (5 more points if you let the department keep them andadd them to its file for other students to use.)

 

5.  20 OriginalSentences    

Write20 original sentences in German, using the vocabulary list we are presentlystudying.  Underline the words from thevocabulary list.  The sentences need notmake a story.  (10 points)

 

6.  Comic Strip      

Draw an original comic strip (4frames minimum) and write the script for it. It should be clever and amusing (but appropriate for school), just likethe comic strips in the newspapers.

 

7.  Outside Reading    

Check out a reader from Frau'slibrary and read the whole book and summarize it in English.  Double the points if you write your summaryin German.

 

8.  Make A Game  

Create a game of some sort using avocabulary list or list of review words. It can copy a game show, something we've played in class or be your owninvention, but it needs to show some originality.  If it's really good, we'll play it in class.

 

9.  Composer  

If you are musically inclined,write and sing a song in German.  Tape iton a cassette.  It must be at least oneminute long.  Include the written lyrics.  Do not try to translate an English song intoGerman.  Use the vocabulary words youalready know.

 

10. Poet  

Write a poem in German with atleast 40 words in it.  If it rhymes youget double credit.

 

11. Newspaper  

Find an article in an Americannewspaper relating to a German-speaking country or the German language.  In German, write a summary of what happened,is going to happen or what's being described. Minimum 75 words.

 

12. Interview    

Interview someone who is a nativeof a German speaking country or has been to a German speaking country or whospeaks German.  Take whatever notes youneed (in English if you want) and then write a summary of at least 75 words inGerman of what you discovered about that person. 

 

13. Greeting Card

Make a very special card,describing how wonderful your teacher is. (OK, LIE IF YOU HAVE TO, BUT MAKE IT GOOD.)  Complimentary drawings would be nice aswell.  Minimum of 30 words.

 

14. Love Letters  

Write a love noteto someone (Mother, Grandma, Dad, etc.). Tell him/her how wonderful s/he is, how much you appreciate what s/hedoes for you and how much s/he means to you. (This time you don't have to lie.) Include some appropriate illustrations and a minimum of 30 words.  (This one will be returned so that you cangive to the person in question.)  Thisone is serious brownie points. (10 points)

 

15. Feed the Poor, StarvingClass

Go to an approved web site andfind a recipe appropriate for the whole class. Make the dish and bring it for the whole class to sample.  Include a picture of you making the foodyourself and/or a note from a parent certifying that you did, indeed, preparethe dish.  We will schedule a "KulturTag" day when the food is to be brought. Remember, recipes must NOT include alcohol (even if it is cooked out),coffee or tea.  Consider whether or notyour dish will require refrigeration or heating as we have limited refrigeratorspace and we can heat only in small microwave ovens.  DON'T DO THIS ONE WITHOUT TEACHER APPROVALFIRST. Print out the recipe from the website so that it can be included in theResource Book.  (20 points)

 

16. You're the Teacher

Teach a family member (who isolder than you) 20 German words, then make up a written quiz and have them takeit.  Grade it and turn it in.

 

17. Let's Travel  

Write or visit a travel agency andhave them give you some travel brochures about any German speakingcountry.  Read the information, then, inGerman, tell which destination you would like to visit and why.

 

 

18. X-Word or WordSearch    

Make a crossword puzzle or wordsearch using at least 25 words from a recent vocabulary list.  If you are making a crossword puzzle, theclues may be in English, but I will be more impressed if they are inGerman.  Include a key.

 

19. TelephoneConversation  

Speak on the telephone withanother person who speaks German. This conversation must last at least 15minutes.  Include a note from a parent orguardian declaring that they did indeed hear you have the conversation and thatthe conversation included more than just "ja" and "nein".  Make sure you include the name, telephonenumber and location of the person with whom you spoke.  This could be done with a classmate and countfor both of you.

 

20. Ask That Star  

Write a list of 20 questions inGerman that you would ask your favorite movie star.  Keep it appropriate for school.

 

21. Dream Date  

Write a diary entry for whathappened on your dream date with your dream guy/girl.  Write a minimum 100 words and keep itappropriate for school.

 

22. Country Report

Go to the library and research aGerman speaking country.  Give somedetails about the culture, people, history, climate and landscape.  One page in English, 1/2 page if written inGerman.

 

23. Travelogues  

Rent or check out a video about aGerman speaking country and watch it. Write a handwritten summary in English of what you saw and learned fromit.  Be sure to include the title andsource.  (Double points if you write yoursummary in German.)

 

24. Net Search      

Go on the internet and print outsome information on a German speaking country, highlight the parts you foundinteresting.  Make sure the web-site ison the material you turn in.

 

25.  Weather Man

 

Go on the net and find out whatthe weather is like in 10 different cities of German-speaking countries for anygiven day.  Write out the weather reportin German and then translate to English. Be sure to mention the web sites you used.

 

26. E-Mail  

Send Frau Hudosnan e-mail message of at least 50 words in German.  Respond to her reply with another message ofat least 50 words.  You may write her atHudson.Shalay@wgmail.org > Print out a copy of the entire transaction. DONOT ERASE THE MESSAGES, just reply.  Keepin mind that Frau knows about how much German you know, so don't bother to aska German speaker to translate for you. Make sure that your full name is included at the end of themessage.  This is especially important ifyour userid or address does not include your name.

 

27. Online Magazine

Find a German languagenewspaper/magazine online and print out (all or a portion if it is verylong).  Find an article and write a briefsummary of it in English. Attach the summary to the article.

 

 

28. What Interests You?

Write a minimum of 100 words aboutanything you would like (in German, of course). You have interesting ideas, make them useful. 

 

29. Storyteller    

Take one of the stories that wehave done in class, draw several pictures for it and then go home and tellsomeone the story WITHOUT using written notes (you can use the pictures).  Have that person write a note saying that youtold them the story without reading it. Attach the note to the pictures.

 

30. Collage  

Borrow some cut up magazines, cutout pictures, glue them on an 8 X 10 sheet of construction paper to make asilly collage; then write a story of at least 100 words about yourcollage. 

 

31. Make Up Your Own  

Make up your own  assignment. Discuss it with me first.  It mustinclude something to do with the class and must include at least 100 words ofGerman.
