Reinforcing and Providing Recognition

Research based focus on instruction with technology NOT instruction about technology.  Information on this page is based on Marzano's Classroom Instruction that Works(2001), Pitler's Using Technology with Classroom Instruction that Works (2007), and the eMINTs Constructivist teaching and learning model.

Reinforcing Effort: Generalizations

  • Not all students realize the importance of believing in effort.

  • Students can learn to operate from a belief that effort pays off even if they do not initially have this belief.
  • Rewards do not necessarily have a negative effect on intrinsic motivation.

  • Reward is most effective when it is contingent on the attainment of some standard of performance.

  • Abstract symbolic recognition (e.g., praise) is more effective than tangible rewards (e.g., candy, money).

Recommendations
  1.  Explicitly teach students about the importance of effort.
  2.  Have students keep track of their effort and achievement.
  3.  Personalize recognition.
  4.  Use the Pause, Prompt, and Praise strategy.
  5.  Use concrete symbols of recognition.
