Philosophy Statement

Consistent with the philosophy and the goals of the Webster Groves School District, the High School Counseling Department is committed to providing comprehensive counseling and guidance services to all students. Special emphasis is placed on facilitating academic, personal, and social growth, as well as the career development of students as they progress from the 9th grade through the 12th grade. Guidance and counseling services are provide within the context of a developmental approach which accepts students where they are in their personal development while providing experiences and resources to help them more fully actualize their own unique potential. To this end, the counseling staff works within the student's total environment to promote growth and insight in all areas.

The fundamental goals of counseling are to help students:

  • Learn effective problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Assume a greater sense of self-direction and responsibility
  • Understand and accept themselves and others
  • Become more aware of their alternatives
  • Increase their level of maturity

More specifically, the high school counselor provides professional assistance to help students attain academic success, learn to cope with personal situations/problems, improve relationships with others and focus on career/vocational choices during each school year. Guidance activities are carefully planned to help students:

  • Understand their unique potential
  • Discover career pathways and options within them
  • Plan course selection and sequences within different subjects/content areas
  • Discuss and chart educational and career path for the future
  • Meet State and District requirements for high school graduation
  • Learn about post secondary educational opportunities
  • Improve relationships with educational partners (family, teachers, administration, community, peers, etc.)
