Reading Overview

Third grade students continue to practice using comprehension strategies, such as inferring and synthesizing. They are expected to be able to make predictions, draw conclusions, identify cause and effect, and identify the author's purpose in fiction and nonfiction. Writing is taught on a daily basis during writing workshop, during which students refine their ability to write a draft, edit that draft, and revise it for publication. The 6-Traits of Writing are continually taught and reviewed, with higher expectations for independent writing. Vocabulary is developed through the study of word parts and the use of  glossaries and dictionaries.
