Math

In math, we cover these 10 units throughout the year. We use many manipulatives and hands-on activities so the students get a grasp of the basic skills and understand the process of how they got their answers. We also encourage the students to explain their thinking in writing.

Third Grade students learn strategies for problem solving. They use manipulatives to create and solve multiplication and division problems. They recognize relationships between plane and solid figures. They are also able to predict and verify trends on graphs. Practice is given in place value and expanded notation. Recall of multiplication fact 0-5 and 10 is evident. They use multiplication strategies for 6's, 8's, and 9's. Students build, recognize and describe geometric shapes. They are given experiences with measurement, graphs, fractions, decimals, time and money. Within every strand, students should use mathematical reasoning, employ problem solving strategies, communicate mathematically, and make connections among mathematical topics and with real-life situations.
